What materials are commonly used in beer brewing equipment industry?

Breweries are specialized food gradesanitary production facilities that adopt a variety of durable, andeasy-to-clean materials.

a.    In old time, copper was commonlyused for , because it is easy to work with and has superiorheat-transfer properties.

b.    Stainless steel is an alloy ofiron, chromium, nickel, and in some cases molybdenum. The advantage of such analloy is that is resists oxidative attack very well. The two main metallurgicalseries in brewery use are food grade stainless steel 304 and 316L. Brewhousevessels, unitank fermenters, and pipeline are commonly constructed of foodgrade stainless steel 304. Beer brewing equipment is fabricated mainly by theTIG welding process. The most common surface in the brewery is 2B, #4, andbrewery quality. Finish 2B has a dull yet very smooth finish originating at therolling mill. Finish #4 has a higher luster but is less smooth; it is a moreexpensive finish, achieved by surface grinding to 120-150 grit. It is usedmainly for vessels exteriors where appearance is import. Finish brewery qualityis used for pipelines and fittings in large breweries. These finishes can bedescribed by a roughness average valve, which relates to finish profilemeasured in microinches. Electro-polished goods have an Ra valve of less than10. Finish 2B has an Ra valve between 20 and 60; Finish #4 has an Ra valvebetween 30 and 70; and that of the ID surface of brewery quality materials mustbe under 100. Stainless steel for breweries use should be pickled or passivated.This process removes iron contamination, oxide scale, and other foreignmaterial that may affect the appearance and /or corrosion resistance of thealloy.

c.    Piping materials vary withapplication, for example, stainless steel, copper tube, threaded steel pipe, PVC,and so on.

d.    Piping and tubing are sized byboth their diameter and wall thickness.

e.    Insulation layer both saves energy and protects brewing stuff from contactingequipment at dangerous temperatures.

f.     Lubricants used in the breweriesinclude various types of greases and machine lubrication oils. The WD-40 is aubiquitous acid-based product and it is best suited for freeing frozen or rustyassemblies.
